Cathy McGowan: Member for Indi

Australia Day message 2017

An Australia Day message from Cathy McGowan, Independent Member for Indi

"Australia Day is an opportunity to celebrate what is great about living in Australia, and particularly in Indi.

"Indi has a strong tradition of volunteering and being involved. Congratulations to all those who are receiving Australia Day awards today in recognition of their generous efforts. A special welcome goes out to those becoming new citizens.  Welcome to Indi!

"In our communities there are many opportunities for everyone to make a contribution to community life.  Can I take the opportunity to say “thanks” to all who work to make Australia such a wonderful place to live.

Enjoy the festivities at the local events around the electorate, and happy Australia Day."

- Cathy

Gary on behalf of Cathy, thank you for sharing your story, and she’d be delighted too if you were able to enjoy the same rights as other Australians. I’ll pass your comment on. If you didn’t enrol to vote prior to voter legislation in the eighties, citizenship would allow your voice to be heard at the polling booth. ~Jane

Dear Cathy,as an early migrant at 8 years old i left school and started work at 15 years old.Ive paid my taxes voted as an early migrant. Ive watched my mother father and sister become australian citizens im now 60 years old still working hard with two stores and online business, proactive in my community and the welfare of our wild life and forests.I am still not an australian citizen yet as ive been waiting to be part of my wonderful country and an equal in my country, but as a gay man i thought i would wait until i have the same rights as all other australians, and then i will be so proud to be a citizen of my country Gary
