Autism Advisory Group formed from effective Indi action
Federal Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan has welcomed the establishment of an Autism Advisory Group. It will provide advice and feedback to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
Ms McGowan asked a question of the Minister for Social Services Dan Tehan in Parliament in May, highlighting the challenges faced by those with Autism when applying for services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
“My office has received a large amount of correspondence from those with Autism who fall outside of the NDIS assessment criteria. They are unable to access crucial services,” Ms McGowan said.
“As a direct result of our question in May, and lobbying by Judy Brewer and many others in the community, Minister Tehan has established the Autism Advisory Group to help fill the gap.
“The formation of this advisory group shows how Independent MPs can take effective action to represent their constituents. I congratulate the Minister for taking positive action on a serious subject.”
The advisory group will investigate approaches to delivering autism services for eligible NDIS participants and children receiving early intervention services, within the context of broader mainstream autism services.
