Benalla residents will soon be able to access a new multipurpose community meeting room.
Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan, congratulated the Benalla Rural City Council on receiving $18,125 federal funding for the Senior Citizens Community Centre Renovation Project.
The project will include converting an under-utilised area within the centre to establish a multipurpose community meeting room. This will involve the installation of storage cupboards, a data projector and meeting room facilities.
The Community Centre Auditorium will also be reconfigured as part of the renovations.
Ms McGowan said the upgrade of the centre will provide the community with access to a safe, compliant and functional multi-use meeting space, kitchenette and storage area.
The centre supports a range of community groups, activities and events including Benalla Ball Room dancing, U3A, Benalla Senior Singers, Seniors Meals, Benalla Bridge Club, Benalla Carpet Bowls, Benalla Tai Chi, Seniors Computer Group and the Benalla Line Dancing Group.
“This project will strengthen volunteer capacity, build inclusiveness and contribute to a vibrant and viable community,” Ms McGowan said.
The Senior Citizens Community Centre is also a designated relief centre for the summer (heatwaves) and supports a range of community groups, activities and events.
Benalla Rural City Council and U3A each provided $20,000 for the project, which has a total cost of $58,125.
“Congratulations to everyone who got behind this project,” Ms McGowan said.
“The community will be rewarded with a fantastic new space to thrive and work together.”
This funding was delivered under Round Two of the Federal Government Stronger Communities Programme (SCP).
