There are so many people in North East Victoria who work hard to make it a place where people can belong. Christmas is a great opportunity to stop and say “thank you”.
Thank you to all who give generously to their communities. The Carevan program is one such organisation seeking to create a sense of belonging for people who are homeless and disadvantaged. It has been good to spend time with them in person in Wangaratta and Wodonga this week and see people supporting each other with joy and generosity.
Schools are also important in promoting belonging. It has been a joy to attend end of year celebrations at Yea High School, Alexandra Secondary College, Tallangatta Secondary College and FCJ College Benalla. Thanks to all the teachers and families for the care they give their communities.
Everyone can participate in making their community welcoming during the festive season. Donate to a gift drive. Participate in one of the many wonderful community events celebrating the festive season. Spend time with a neighbour who might be isolated. Make a point of thanking others.
On a personal note, rest and relaxation with family and friends in the Indigo Valley over the Christmas break will be important after a big year. There is plenty to be done in 2017!
Merry Christmas, and a safe and happy New Year.
