Fake honey a concern for Indi’s agriculture
Federal Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan said a reported problem of fake honey imports was a growing concern for local communities.
Ms McGowan has spoken to local producers, including Beechworth Honey’s Jodie Goldsworthy.
“I will continue to follow the situation and seek advice from local experts,” Ms McGowan said.
“There are many beekeepers and farmers in Indi who have previously raised fake honey as an issue. There is evidence to indicate it is a significant problem that will affect the local agriculture industry.
“Farmers rely on bees to pollinate approximately two-thirds of Australia’s food supply. That’s fruit, such as apples, avocados, berries and nuts, as well as many of our staple vegetables and crops like canola. Maintaining a vibrant beekeeping industry is vital to our agricultural sector and our population’s food security.”
