A Federal funding initiative aimed at building community infrastructure is delivering for Mansfield. Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan, congratulated the Mansfield Shire Council on receiving $18,125 from Round One of the Federal Government Stronger Communities Programme (SCP) for the project, Stroll Down Memory Lane.
Ms McGowan established the Indi Stronger Communities Programme Advisory Committee (ISCPAC) to deliver the Stronger Communities Programme. Community priorities guided the application process. Representatives from ICSPAC engaged with community groups to determine eligibility. Indi was allocated $150,000 in the Federal Budget for the SCP in 2014-15.
The Stroll Down Memory Lane project includes:
- Picnic area installed along history trail
- Signage on history trail
- Research for signage content
- Interpretive brochure
Ms McGowan said the project helped celebrate the significant history of Bonnie Doon.
“The historical walk with improved walking paths, new signage and public picnic area will be built where the original town of Bonnie Doon stood before it was flooded by the construction of Lake Eildon about 60 years ago,” she said.
A brochure will be produced with information on the history walk and links to local businesses and key attractions, including the Great Victorian Rail Trail.
“The Bonnie Doon community will welcome these improvements and I know there will be an even greater sense of community ownership when it is completed,” Ms McGowan said.
Ms McGowan praised the Bonnie Doon Community Group for its contribution of $4000 to join Mansfield Shire Council’s $14,000 towards the total project cost of $36,287.
“It’s pleasing to see this level of commitment from the Bonnie Doon Community group. This shows the local community is willing to help the project get completed,” she said. “I look forward to visiting Bonnie Doon and seeing how the community benefits from this successful project.”
Ms McGowan thanked Mansfield Shire Council CEO Alex Green for his efforts as an ICSPAC representative in the process.
