Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan is pleased the Coalition Government is following through with its election commitment to Victorian Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteers.
Ms McGowan said she would be keeping a close eye on the progress of draft legislation released today.
“In principle I am supportive of the Prime Minister’s proposal to change the Fair Work Act to protect the role of the CFA and other volunteers,” Ms McGowan said.
“I look forward to reading The Fair Work Amendment (Respect for Emergency Services Volunteers) Bill 2016 when I return to Canberra next week.
“I will be closely watching to ensure that the legislation delivers the best outcomes for CFA volunteers.”
As a CFA member for more than 15 years, Ms McGowan understands the value of volunteers to rural communities.
“Volunteers are an important part of our communities and in particular CFA volunteers play a key role in keeping our communities safe,” she said.
