Field Marshal rank for Sir John Monash one step closer
Federal Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has given notice in Parliament of the Honour John Monash Private Member’s Bill.
Ms McGowan has been working with former Farrer MP and Indi resident the Honourable Tim Fischer AC to develop the Bill, which will promote Monash from General to Field Marshal, the highest rank in the Australian Army. The Bill will be introduced next Monday, 22 October
“It is a great privilege to push ahead with legislation to honour John Monash. He was a crucial part of ensuring Australia’s freedom in World War I. Promoting him to Field Marshal will ensure his efforts are duly acknowledged,” Ms McGowan said.
“This carefully drafted Bill will posthumously promote Monash to Field Marshal from 1 January 1931, when he returned to active duty.”
The Hon Mr Fischer, chair of the Saluting Monash Council, said Monash had received no Australian Government awards after 11am, 11 November 1918, the end of WWI. He said it was time to correct this ahead of the centenary of the Armistice.
“Vice Regal level opposition from a previous Governor General and others have been largely accommodated. The Bill ensures there can be no opening of flood gates and simply salutes our greatest Citizen Military Leader,” he said.
