Government called to respect its forestry process
Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has called on the government to respect the process for determining activity in Victoria’s forests.
Ms McGowan said she was surprised by the announcement from the Minister for Agriculture and Water the Hon Barnaby Joyce of a proposal to open up new forestry zones.
“There is already an established process in place for considering how forestry is managed,” Ms McGowan said.
“The government established the Regional Forestry Agreement to make sure decisions around forestry are made carefully and with proper consultation,” Ms McGowan said.
Ms McGowan has met with senior staff from Minister Joyce’s office and the Federal Minister for Environment Josh Frydenberg.
“I will be writing to encourage Premier Daniel Andrews to continue negotiations on the RFA in the interests of all parties,” Ms McGowan said.
“It’s up to the Victorian government to follow through on the RFA process for Victoria together with the Victorian Forest Industry Taskforce.”
