Independents join forces to seek debt waiver for victims of family violence

29 May 2017

Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has joined with Independent Member for Denison Mr Andrew Wilkie to support a Bill to allow Centrelink debts to be waived for victims of family violence.

Ms McGowan, in seconding the Social Services Legislation Amendment (Relieving Domestic Violence Victims of Debt) Bill 2017 tabled in Parliament on Monday 29 May, said if adopted it would ease the burden on some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

“I acknowledge the proactive and solution-based approach of my colleague and seek the government's support for it,” Ms McGowan said.

Ms McGowan said this was another opportunity for independent representatives to join forces to call the government to listen to community concerns.

“There are complex challenges for victims of family violence in navigating Centrelink, and services to support them are even harder to access in regional areas.

“This is an opportunity for the government to show compassion to a very vulnerable group of people.”
