Regional Higher Education Forum
Cathy welcomed Senator Bridget McKenzie to Indi to host the forum. There was strong discussion around the inequities faced by rural students, including youth allowance and gap year arrangements. About 30 people attended the forum, including representatives from unis, TAFES and families, and departments of education, and social services. Feedback before September 3 can be sent via email to email@example.com. A report will be compiled for Government based on the community consultation.
Cathy convened another meeting of the Indi Telecommunications Action Group (ITAG) at the Wangaratta Electorate Office. Representatives from the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN), Telstra, the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee (RTIRC) and the South Western Wireless Communications Company (SWWCC) attended the meeting. Cathy also attended the ACCAN community session at Beechworth Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday.
Dederang's Geoff Seymour and Esther Trustum from Kancoona were the July recipients of the Sensational Seniors Awards in the Alpine Shire. Cathy presented the awards as part of the Alpine Shire Council Positive Ageing A Team meeting in Dederang.
Yarrunga Primary School student leaders and members of the school council gave Cathy a tour around the school. A highlight was seeing the kitchen garden and hearing students talk about how much they enjoyed being part of the school community. Cathy will visit Springhurst Primary School next week.
