The Week in Parliament

Rural Health Providers

This week saw Multi-Purpose Service Providers in Canberra lobbying for appropriate funding for their health services. Cathy asked the Minister about this in Parliament. Cathy also spoke to the House about the success of Albury-Wodonga Health. This includes an important new oncology program for the Border region.

Rural Unemployed Supported with Vote

Cathy voted against social security legislation amendments seeking to tighten restrictions on the unemployed. She called for a multi-faceted plan for getting people into work, particularly young people in rural areas. The legislation has passed the House of Reps and has now passed to the Senate.

Nation’s Historic Farming Families Acknowledged

On Monday the Glass family of Yackandandah was acknowledged in Parliament for their almost 160-year association with the Allans Flat farm “Redlands”. Cathy acknowledged this history – and others’ – in a speech highlighting the Century Farm and Station Awards.

Young Rural Carers

Cathy spoke on Monday about the Young Carers’ Mentor Program which supports young, often isolated people from our community caring for an ill or disabled family member. Cathy calls on all community members to support this program by mentoring a young person.

Vale Don Chambers

Tuesday brought the sad and untimely news of the death of local community leader Don Chambers, Indigo shire councillor from Rutherglen. Cathy spoke warmly to Parliament about Don’s leadership and the great loss his death brings to Rutherglen and the wider North East community. Don is pictured above with Cathy and Indigo mayoress Karen Gaffney at Rutherglen's Winery Walkabout in June.

Refugee call

Cathy yesterday repeated her calls on the Government to get children out of detention. She acknowledged a group of religious leaders from across the spectrum who met with parliamentarians to discuss asylum seeker and refugee policy.
