Innovation roadshow comes to Indi

Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan AO, is encouraging key organisations in the North East to attend the National Innovation and Science Agenda roadshow in Wodonga next week.

The roadshow is being held from 11am-12.30pm on Wednesday, December 16. Registrations can be made at the Innovation website. Venue information will be provided upon registration.

Ms McGowan said agriculture, industry and business representative groups, higher education organisations and council representatives would benefit from attending the information roadshow.

The National Innovation and Science Agenda was announced on Monday.

“I share Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s optimism for the future of Australia,” Ms McGowan said. “I believe regional Australia is well poised to capitalise on this program. This will help Indi become a prosperous, caring community alive with opportunities for everyone.”

Ms McGowan said agriculture was the main topic of discussion at the recent Indi Community Summit. The sector is worth more than $600 million per year to Indi and is the fifth largest employer, with around 5000 businesses across eight local governments.

Ms McGowan said regions with a strong agricultural sector were best placed to take advantage of initiatives for university research and end-user engagement.

“Agriculture is ready for change and the sector wants to innovate and create strong partnerships to grow the industry in the North East,” Ms McGowan said. “Agriculture and manufacturing when combined is the second largest employer in the Hume region.”

The National Innovation and Science Agenda will promote ideas to help create growth, local jobs and global success.

Other initiatives which will benefit Indi, include:

  • range of tax incentives
  • entrepreneurs’ support programme
  • regulatory regime for crowd-sourced equity funding
  • research infrastructure funding
  • collaborative university research grants
  • increased opportunities for women in science, technology engineering and maths
  • digital marketplace for IT procurement
