Women called to be bold on International Women’s Day
Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan is echoing the call of International Women’s Day 2017, “Be bold for change”.
“Indi is full of strong, effective women acting for change in their local communities, in business, politics, sport and international affairs,” Ms McGowan said.
“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate everything they do.”
Ms McGowan spent time last week in a workshop run by Global Sisters, a network enabling women outside the mainstream work force to be financially independent.
“The business ideas in the workshop were so inspiring. They included fashion design in partnership with refugees, taking sewing skills to isolated people, and developing agribusiness skills.
“The participants’ passion to follow their entrepreneurial dream while improving their communities was clear.”
Ms McGowan, who has devoted a significant portion of her working life to mentoring women in leadership, said that women have an essential role to play in rural and regional economies.
“Women contribute more than $14 billion to the economy through agriculture. Support for women in rural and regional areas pays off for all Australia,” she said.
“I encourage women to be bold in insisting on the things that make this possible: access to childcare, appropriate education and training, and leadership opportunities.”
Ms McGowan will speak at the Women’s Wellness Network International Women’s Day breakfast in Myrtleford on Thursday 9 March. Women at events on IWD can use the hashtag #bebold on social media to celebrate the day.
