Line upgrade needs leadership to end wait for trains
Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has called on the government to show leadership to ensure $100 million for the North East rail line upgrade will “fix the problem”.
Ms McGowan asked the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Hon Darren Chester in Question Time to take a leadership role and bring together the ARTC, the Victorian and New South Wales Governments, V-line, PTV and NSW Trains to come up with a plan to deliver the upgrade.
“Senate Estimates has revealed the Commonwealth is seeking a co-contribution from the Victorian Government. This has made an already complex problem even more so,” Ms McGowan said.
“The Victorian Government is part of the solution but the answer is not simply funding – it needs leadership and collaboration.”
While Mr Chester stopped short of committing specifically to an expert advisory group, Ms McGowan said she would continue for its formation as the best way forward.
“As an independent member I have been able to work with both State and Federal Governments to help secure the funding, but now is the time for effective action to end the blame game once and for all.
“People in North East Victoria have been waiting for trains long enough.”
