Making $235 million count for the North East rail line
Federal Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan met today with V/Line chief executive officer, James Pinder, for the first time since an additional $135 million in Commonwealth funding was announced for the North East rail line.
At the meeting, Ms McGowan called for V/Line and the Victorian Government to develop a plan to work with communities in Indi. The plan would detail the delivery of the total investment of $235 million to improve rail services on the North East line.
“I am urging V/Line to work with the community and its customers, particularly during the period of construction, to ensure they are kept informed of progress of the works and the impact on existing services,” Ms McGowan said.
“This communication is vital to rebuilding trust between V/Line and its customers. Mr Pinder has acknowledged V/Line’s responsibility for the breakdown in service delivery on the North East line last Christmas. Mr Pinder has assured me there are robust processes now in place to deliver reliable rolling stock and there will not be a repeat of this service failure.”
Ms McGowan said work is underway to develop new governance arrangements for delivery of the $1.7 billion Victorian Regional Rail Revival Package and associated investments including the $235 million for the North East rail line.
“Mr Pinder has committed to getting back in touch with me next week with details of a community engagement program for the North East rail project. I have asked V/Line to establish a stakeholder group as soon as possible.”
