MP says record on refugees speaks for itself
Federal Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan said today that her voting record speaks for itself on the issue of refugees seeking asylum in Australia.
“In my speeches and in all my conversations on this topic I have consistently talked about how important it is for Australia to uphold its international obligations,” Ms McGowan said.
“Support for asylum seekers and keeping our borders secure does not mean we should treat people in anything less than a humane way.
“Communities in Indi have consistently called for compassion and mercy for refugees. This is consistent with getting asylum seekers out of indefinite detention. My position on this is unchanged.”
Ms McGowan said recent media speculation on how she will vote on the Urgent Medical Transfers Bill coming to Parliament in February had caused concern.
“I welcome the government continuing to listen to the crossbenchers on this and all legislation. I encourage people to get in touch with my office as your input will be vital for this process.”
Ms McGowan said this was an important issue requiring community input.
“Please contact my office and let me know your views on how Australia can uphold its international obligations on asylum seekers and keep its borders secure,” she said.
