Multicultural Myrtleford to share rich Italian heritage with Ambassador
Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan says the visit of Italy’s Ambassador to Australia His Excellency Pier Francesco Zazo is a chance to celebrate Myrtleford’s long and rich Italian heritage during the La Fiera Festival.
Ms McGowan invited His Excellency Mr Zazo and Mrs Svetlana Zazo to North East Victoria following a meeting in Canberra in March.
“The Festival is an opportunity to showcase to His Excellency the way Myrtleford and surrounds have benefited over decades from the hard work and social investment Italian migrants put in,” Ms McGowan said.
“This hasn’t always been an easy thing and our Italian migrants had to adapt not just to a new country but changing circumstances such as the closure of the tobacco industry.
“Now Myrtleford’s Italian heritage is embedded in its way of life, and this wonderful event demonstrates what a good thing that is.”
Ms McGowan congratulated the festival convenor Mr John Reynolds-Smith, all those involved in organising the festival and events, Alpine Shire Council, and the many sponsors supporting the event.
“I am sure His Excellency and Mrs Zazo will receive a truly warm Indi welcome,” Ms McGowan said.
Ms McGowan will attend a Civic Reception with His Excellency and Mrs Zazo, and Alpine Shire Mayor Cr Ron Janas and Mrs Glenda Janas at Michellini Winery at 5.30pm on Friday 19 May, and the La Fiera Mass and Procession at 9am on Saturday 20 May.
