Regions hold answers to their aged care needs, Minister hears

Independent Member for Cathy McGowan has congratulated St Catherine’s Hostel, Wangaratta, for demonstrating successful local models of aged care to the Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health.

Ms McGowan welcomed Minister Wyatt to Wangaratta to visit St Catherine’s on Monday 25 September. Nurse practitioner Steven Voogt demonstrated his work alongside GPs, with patients linked up with specialists via telehealth appointments.

“Today St Catherine’s demonstrated best practice in how regional communities use expertise and local knowledge to deliver successful programs.”

Ms McGowan acknowledged the “exceptional support” nurse practitioners provide to a heavily burdened rural GP workforce.

“My invitation to the Minister was an opportunity for the practitioners to put the case for access to adequate Medicare rebates and training resource to meet future demand,” Ms McGowan said.

Describing aged care as a growth sector in the region’s economy, Ms McGowan said there were good opportunities ahead for service providers.

“The local investment plan for the region’s $20 million share of the Regional Jobs and Investment Package has identified aged care as a priority area for funding,” Ms McGowan said.
