Independent Member for Cathy McGowan has welcomed the formation of a Regional Ministerial Task Force.
Ms McGowan, who has been pushing for a whole-of-government approach to regional policy, said she would welcome an opportunity to work with the Task Force as an independent voice for rural and regional Australia.
“This is a great step by the government towards putting regional needs at the front and centre of policy making,” Ms McGowan said.
“The need for a comprehensive regional policy has underpinned all my recent action working with the government on the dairy industry, telecommunications, childcare reform and rail services.”
Ms McGowan said that she was encouraged by the remit of the Task Force to assist in the development of economic growth and improved access to infrastructure and services at the most senior levels.
“A white paper on regional policy from the Task Force would be a significant achievement,” Ms McGowan said.
“The establishment of a Regional Policy Cabinet Committee as the end product of the Task Force term would be a great victory for regional Australia.”
Ms McGowan will seek further details on the terms of reference for the Task Force.
