Constitutional recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

Have you made a submission to the interim report released by the Joint Select Committee on Constitutional Recognition relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples (JSCCR)? A hearing will be held in Albury/Wodonga on 24 September 2018 and people who make submissions may be asked to share their views. Feedback can be made until 17 September 2018. Cathy is a member of the committee and spoke to the interim report in parliament this week. Watch the speech here.

Pay Day Lenders Motion

It was great to have Sandra Blake from St Stephens in Wodonga at Parliament this week as Cathy introduced debate about the Pay Day Lenders Bill that will tighten the regulations for accessing pay day loans. Sandra volunteered with Cathy’s office this week and has pushed for action on pay day loans that often create a vicious circle of high-interest debt for those who take out loans.

Mobile Child Care void

Cathy has called on the Government to report to Parliament the impact of changes to the funding of mobile child care services in rural and remote Australia. Anne Bowler from Community Early Years Childcare in Wodonga met with Cathy to discuss how to proceed after all mobile childcare services in Indi were closed due to funding changes.

Mansfield Hospital

The wonderful staff and work efforts at Mansfield Hospital were acknowledged in Parliament this week. To watch what Cathy said about this community asset, click here.

Indi schools visit Parliament

Student leaders from Galen Catholic College and Beechworth Secondary College visited Cathy at Parliament House this week. The students toured the building, watched Question Time and gained a better understanding of Cathy’s role as an independent MP. Beechworth students also raised concerns about public transport, poor mobile phone coverage and problems with broadband. Cathy will work with the SRC to see what action can be taken.

Volunteers add value to Canberra office

Three wonderful volunteers, Maz Dowling, Sandra Blake and Rhonda Diffey, and intern Donald Ritchie, joined Cathy’s Canberra staff this week. Would you like to volunteer? Email cathy.mcgowan.mp@aph.gov.au to sign up.

Have your say about the music industry

A Parliamentary inquiry into the Australian music industry is calling for submissions to understand how Australian composers, songwriters, performers, and producers can expand their reach and better compete with overseas artists. Visit the website for more details.
