Flowerdale celebrates mobile phone tower

The Flowerdale community is enjoying improved mobile phone reception with the launch this week of a new mobile phone tower by Cathy and Telstra’s Loretta Willaton. Kinglake West and Yea towers are due to come on line in 2018. The Tolmie, Archerton and Ancona towers have been activated and an official launch is planned for 23 January 2018. We are working with Telstra to confirm launch dates for other towers that have come on line. More information in the new year.



Members of the Tallangatta Lake Community Action Group met with Cathy this week. The group wants consistent water levels at Tallangatta all year round. Cathy has encouraged them to connect with other community groups in Indi, working to change Government policy on major infrastructure.


Early Christmas gift for Local Sporting Champions

Twelve young sportspeople from throughout Indi received the good news they are recipients of grants under round two of the Local Sport Champions Programme. They are Ellie Jarratt of Osbornes Flat; Kristy Whitehead of Towong Upper; Dominic Walker of Greta West; Joanna Garoni and Nathan Pearce, both of Wodonga; Benjamin Jones, Matthew Carter and Brandyn Larkins, all of West Wodonga; Lauren Hutchinson of Maindample; Rory Smyth and Hamish Smyth, both of Chiltern; and Ashley Farmer of Bright. The grants provide financial assistance to young people aged between 12 and 18 when competing, coaching or umpiring/refereeing at a recognised National School Sport or Australian Sports Commission championships. Congratulations to these young people as they embark on the next stage of their sporting careers.


Input sought for Residential Aged Care Inquiry

The Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport has commenced an Inquiry into the Quality of Care in Residential Aged Care Facilities in Australia. The committee will examine Australia’s residential aged care system, in particular, the quality of care and services provided to residents. Submissions are now open until Thursday, 8 February 2018. Interim Report on regional development and decentralisation available

The Select Committee on Regional Development and Decentralisation has tabled its Interim Report after public hearings have been held around Australia including at Wodonga. More than 180 written submissions have been received with about 20 per cent of those made by those living in Indi. Further public hearings will be held in Queensland, NSW and the ACT in early 2018 before a final report is tabled later in the year. The Interim Report can be found here

Committee calls for overhaul of family law system

The Parliament’s Social Policy and Legal Affairs Committee has called for urgent improvements to the family law system to better support and protect those affected by family violence. Key concerns discussed in the report include the adversarial nature of the family law system, inappropriate responses to reports of family violence, and the disconnect between state, territory and federal jurisdiction. It makes 33 recommendations for a new family law system. The report is here

Final report from Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

The Royal Commission was established on Friday, 11 January 2013, with the appointment of six Commissioners following the recommendation from the then Prime Minister Julia Gillard. On 15 December 2017, the Royal Commission presented a final report to the Governor-General, detailing the culmination of a five-year inquiry. The final report can be accessed here
