Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan AO, had congratulated the Wahgunyah on a team effort for the Wahgunyah Rec Reserve building expansion and upgrade. The official opening of the revamped facility will be held this Thursday, June 16.
“This is such an important facility for Wahgunyah,” Ms McGowan said. “It’s amazing to see the transformation, the committee and community will be proud of the upgrade. This is reward for the hard work people have put in to get this result everyone. The town is the fastest growing in the Indigo Shire and young families are being attracted to the regional lifestyle.”
Ms McGowan said football and netball played a major role in health and wellbeing for young people in Wahgunyah.
“Club officials tell me there are well over 30 under-12s in the junior footy, and the netball numbers are very strong,” Ms McGowan said. “The combined Wahgunyah-Rutherglen Murray Felines team in the 2016 AFLNEB Youth Girls League is also was an indication of how strong sport is in the area.
“During football and netball season, training nights are a time when everyone gets together. During my recent visit it was great to see kids sitting down with friends and family, eating dinner and socialising. This helps form the strong bonds that make our communities special.”
Ms McGowan acknowledged the Federal Government providing $200,000 in funding to help deliver the upgrade. “This is taxpayers’ dollars coming back into Indi. I’m looking forward to joining the Wahgunyah community for the official opening of the building this Thursday,” Ms McGowan said.
