Wangaratta RSL sub-branch members pay visit to Canberra

Four members of the Wangaratta RSL sub-branch, including president, Dr Warren Garrett, and immediate past executive, Norm Fearn, Ken Clarke OAM and Jim Cozens were in Canberra on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The quartet accepted an invitation from Federal Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan AO, to visit the capital and talk about issues in relation to the Rural City of Wangaratta and the RSL sub-branch.
Dr Garrett said the men arrived on Tuesday in time to take a seat in Question Time, which proved to be a highly entertaining hour, and prelude to the 2014-15 Budget announcement later that night.
“We took particular interest on the impact the Budget will have on senior people, many of whom are members of our RSL,” Dr Garrett said.
On Wednesday, the delegation met with Ms McGowan and then dined in the Members Dining Room at Parliament House before returning to Wangaratta.
“We were able to improve our communication networks and gain more knowledge on these networks which will help improve the service to members of the sub-branch,” Dr Garrett said.
Ms McGowan was pleased the RSL delegation accepted the invitation.
“I felt honoured and privileged to have their company and I thank them for taking the time and effort to visit the Indi Canberra office,” she said.
Ms McGowan said she also enjoyed her involvement with the ANZAC Centenary Grants for Indi Committee, as they determined which 2015 projects in Indi to submit for Department of Veterans Affairs funding consideration.
“It was a pleasure to work with the committee members from across the electorate, and make lasting connections with them,” she said.
And Ms McGowan would welcome other RSL delegations making the trek up the Hume and seeing the sights and taking in some of the action in Parliament House.
“I’d be very pleased to see all RSL sub-branches pay a visit to Canberra and come to see me in Parliament House,” she said.
